W.B. Walker In the 100-plus year history of the Covington Volunteer Fire Department, 11 men have had the distinction of serving as department chief. From the time the department organized in 1902, these men have steered the department through various challenges. Today, Chief Wes Walker, who has been involved in the fire service for almost 30 years, leads the members of the Covington Volunteer Fire Department through new challenges and into a new millennium. Wes began his fire service career in his hometown fire department of Rainelle, W.Va., as a junior member at the age of 15. After graduation from Alderson-Broaddus College, he moved to Plymouth Meeting, Penn., and became a member of the Harmonville Fire Department. At Harmonville, he served as a Captain and Training Officer in the department. In 1987, Wes and his wife, Susan, relocated to Covington, where Wes opened a branch of his family's business, Tri-County Furniture Co. Residing in Valley Ridge at the time, Wes joined the Selma Fire Department. In February of 1988, Wes and Susan purchased a home in Pine Valley, and Wes became a member of the Covington Volunteer Fire Department in April.
For four years, he was the coordinator of the Region 10 Hazardous Materials Team. He also holds certifications in Haz-Mat Level 1 and 2, Technical Decon, L.P. Gas Emergencies, Basic Pump Operations, Emergency Vehicle Operation, Vehicle Extrication, Incident Command System, Strategy and Tactics, Command School and he is currently certified as a Commonwealth of Virginia Level III instructor. |
